The government can further tighten the rules for issuing new SIM cards and opening bank account. The government intends to conduct a thorough investigation of all the information related to the mobile SIM and the person who opens a bank account, so that the documents of another person cannot be used for both these works.

At present, whenever someone applies to open a bank account and take a SIM, it is verified by taking details from Aadhaar through online e-KYC. At the same time, the account of companies also opens only through the incorporating certificate.

Fraud has increased
Fraud cases have increased rapidly in banks for the past few years. Apart from this, by taking mobile SIM on fake documents, it is also being used to carry out criminal activities. This is happening due to the opening of a bank account being easily available. According to a report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the amount stuck in the bank fraud cases in 2021-22 was Rs 41,000 crore.

Now the government is considering hardening the KYC rules. Under this, the government can make the physical verification of the customer mandatory. This means that the facility to open bank account and take mobile SIM from Aadhaar verification can be closed.

The government may ask telecom operators and banks to implement new rules soon. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also held a review meeting on this issue with the Ministry of Finance, and Telecom. The roadmap of this decision is reported to be discussed in the meeting.
