New Delhi. In the 71st National Film Awards, Assam films and actors achieved remarkable success. On this occasion, the cinema tradition and talent of the state received respect on the national stage. At the ceremony, the President of Assam’s famous film ‘Rangtapu 1982’ was awarded the national honor. This achievement is not only a proud moment for Assamese cinema, but also took the identity of local stories and artists to new heights.

Story of pain and struggle
The film ‘Rangtapu 1982’ is based on the backdrop of the 1980s of Assam. The story brings out the alleged atrocities that local people have to bear the hands of illegal migrants. However, director Adityam Saikia says that this is not a political film. The story of ‘Rangtapu 1982’ revolves around a pregnant woman named Moram (Amy Baruah), and her sisters Rupali (Kalpana Kalita) and Mala (Alishmita Kalita). Both these sisters are going through a horrific gang rape. At the same time, Rafija (Rimpi Das) is an illegal migrant woman, who is suffering from exploitation by men of her own community. The film presents the pain, violence and struggle of these four women in a very poignant manner.

New flight to Assam cinema
This historical success of Arun Kumar Rai has not only given pride an opportunity for the artists and producers of the state, but has also given Assamese cinema a new identity throughout the country. For a long time, regional films had to struggle to make their place in the mainstream, but this achievement has proved that the clay stories of Assam and the sensations of the society there can also be appreciated at the national level. Cinema experts believe that this victory will inspire young directors, writers and technicians to move forward in the coming years. This will not only create new opportunities in film production at the local level, but will also open the way to present the culture, tradition and contemporary challenges of the state on a big stage.
