‘Hari Har Veera Mallu: Part 1- Sword vs Spirit’ takes us to the upheaval filled round of the 17th century Mughal Empire, especially in 1684, when Chhatrapati Shivaji’s death was four years after the death of Shivaji and the atrocities of Aurangzeb (Bobby Deol) and the Hindus were overwhelmed. In this background, a fictional rebellious hero called Veera Mallu (Pawan Kalyan) emerges. Its mission is clear: protecting Sanatan Dharma and stealing the iconic Kohinoor diamond to liberate a city from the clutches of the Mughals.

The film challenges the alleged glorification of the Mughal rulers and exposes the flexibility of the anonymous heroes of India and the looting of the country’s wealth. ‘Hari Har Veera Mallu’ is a large-scale period action-adventure, which tries to give a strong message with grandeur. This film, which has been stuck for a long time due to the political busyness of epidemic and Pawan Kalyan, has now finally come to the audience.

Pawan Kalyan has taken over the entire weight of the film in the title role. His acting is an excellent mix of power and perseverance, which reflects the soul of his people and a warrior fighting for faith. His martial arts expertise is clearly visible in the 18 -minute climax sequence, which he himself has choreographed. Bobby Deol has given a commendable performance as a cruel emperor Aurangzeb, although his character could have been given more depth. Assistant artists like Nidhi Aggarwal, Nargis Fakhri, Nora Fatehi and Satyaraj have given good support, even if some characters have not been fully developed.

Director Krish Jagalamudi and AM Jyoti Krishna, along with screenwriters Sai Madhav Burra, try to weave an epic story. The film has a successful combination of theft on theft, rebellion and historical repression. However, there is a disintegration in some places in storytelling, especially in the second part, which slows down a bit. Aurangzeb’s cruel governance and visuals related to Jizia tax can make the audience emotional. The emphasis of the film on Sanatan Dharma and spiritual resistance makes it different from other historical action films. The technical grandeur of the film is commendable.

MM Kirwani’s music is its biggest strength. His score takes the emotional and dramatic moments of the film to heights, especially in songs like ‘Asura Hananam’. Gyana Shekhar VS and Manoj Paramahansa’s cinematography captures the magnificent sets and huge landscapes of the Mughal era very beautifully, which has been closely recreated by production designer Thota Tharani. VFX, which has been supervised by Ben Lock (who has worked in Aquaman and Star Wars: The Force Awakence), further enhances the grand scenes, although some scenes may make a slight decrease in the quality of CGI.

Nick Powell, Ram-Lakshman and Peter Hen’s team is the main attraction of the action sequence film, which fills the audience with thrill. ‘Hari Har Veera Mallu’ touches the poignant topics of resistance against the oppression, which exposes the brutal influence of Aurangzeb’s atrocities and Jiziya tax. The film praises Indian heroes and criticizes the historical glory of the Mughals, which aims to bring out the plunder of India’s basic resistance stories and money like Kohinoor. Pawan Kalyan’s personal commitment, in which he returned a part of his remuneration and advocated historical accuracy, reinforces these thematic intentions. ‘Hari Har Veera Mallu’ is a grand and adorned period drama adorned with a powerful music score and effective production design of Pawan Kalyan.

Even though its ambitious story comes up somewhere, the film successfully presents exciting action scenes and a strong message of cultural and spiritual resistance. The film creates a strong foundation for its much awaited sequel and its success will definitely affect the future of this epic saga. You can watch this film by going to theaters with your entire family. I have 3 stars out of 5 to the film.
