Even though he is no more in this world today, the characters played by him are still alive in the minds of people. He created a stir by playing negative roles at a time when heroes used to stay away from negative roles.

Ashok Kumar’s name is always recorded in golden letters in the history of Bollywood. He was not only a great actor but also a personality who gave a new direction to Hindi cinema. Very few people know that his journey in films did not start with any glamor or big dreams, rather his first job was as a lab assistant in Bombay Talkies.

With this job, he suddenly became the hero of films and captured the hearts of people. His real name was Kumudlal Ganguly. His father Kunjilal Ganguly was a lawyer. Ashok also had a dream of becoming a lawyer since childhood and his father also inspired him to follow the same path. But after failing the bar exam the first time, Ashok Kumar felt that perhaps this was not his path. After this he came to Mumbai to prove himself.

In the year 1936, when the shooting of the film ‘Jeevan Naiya’ was going on, the lead hero of the film Nazmul Hasan suddenly left the film. Bombay Talkies owner Himanshu Rai immediately decided to make Ashok Kumar a hero. Director Franz Austen was also surprised to hear this news, because he believed that Ashok’s look was not fit for the hero. Despite this, Bombay Talkies did not change its decision and thus Ashok Kumar acted in the film ‘Jeevan Naiya’ for the first time.

During this film, his name was changed from Kumudlal Ganguly to ‘Ashok Kumar’. From here his new identity started forming. ‘Jeevan Naiya’ became successful and Ashok Kumar gradually became the first superstar of Hindi cinema. His simplicity and natural acting won the hearts of people. He worked in many memorable films like ‘Achhoot Kanya’, ‘Howrah Bridge’, ‘Kismat’, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’, ‘Bandini’, ‘Bandhan’, ‘Jhula’ and ‘Kangan’.

In the year 1943, Ashok Kumar was seen in the film ‘Kismat’. He got great recognition from this film. The film had created a record which no one could break for 32 years. However, after 32 years, Amitabh-Dharmendra’s film ‘Sholay’ broke the record of this film.

Let us tell you that in this film released in the year 1943, Bollywood’s evergreen actor Ashok Kumar was seen in the lead role. He shook the box office with his tremendous acting. In those times when the image of the hero was clean, he changed the image of the hero by playing the role of an anti-hero.
