Ajay Devgan’s sports drama ‘Maidan’ was a passion project by producer Boney Kapoor and its shooting started in 2019. It took about five years to complete. This movie reached the big screen in 2024 after facing many hurdles, but despite this it flopped badly at the box office.

Initially there was a plan to make Ajay Devgan’s Maidan film in a budget of 120 crores, but later its budget increased to 210 crores, causing the producer Boney Kapoor to suffer heavy losses. Eventually, the producer had to borrow to repay his debt.

On the game changer podcast, Boney Kapoor said, ‘I suffered a loss in the field. The film was stuck for more than four years due to Kovid epidemic. Think, by January 2020, about 70 percent of the film was completed. Before the beginning of the epidemic. We had to shoot the match sequence from the last week of March. All international teams had arrived. There was an international crew of about 200 to 250 people, there were players from different countries.

Boney Kapoor said, ‘Nobody knew that the lockdown would increase for the next several months. I stopped my unit here until the last flight of the country was announced. This happened to me about four times. Apart from the epidemic, I was also harmed due to a cyclone which came during that time. The set of my entire stadium was destroyed. The budget we had decided was 120 crores, but finally we had to spend around 210 crores.

He further said, ‘Whenever we were shooting the scenes of the match, at that time there were about 800 people in our unit. But there were many restrictions due to Kovid. During that time I got food from the Taj Hotel for the entire unit. I always had to keep four ambulances and doctors posted. Due to the restrictions, we were not allowed to place more than 150 people on the set. We were not allowed to sit together and eat food together. I just had to get about five tents for food and water.

The ground team had to go to Bangkok for football sequence, which increased the cost of making. Boney Kapoor said, “We had to show at least 2000 people in the stadium, so that a crowd of 40,000 could be shown through editing.” After all these difficulties, when the film was released in the year 2024, it could not impress the audience. The box office earned only Rs 68 crore. Due to this loss, Boney Kapoor had to borrow to pay his vendors.

Boney Kapoor said, ‘When the ground flopped at the box office, I had to borrow to pay my vendors. The film flopped, but he had no fault in this. Rather, he waited patiently for four years and some even cut their fees by 10-15 percent. It is known that ‘Maidan’ proved to be the biggest flop film of Ajay Devgan’s career.
