Guru Dutt’s father, born in a Brahmin family in Karnataka, was Shivshankar Rao Padukone, a headmaster and banker, while his mother, Vasanti Padukone, was a teacher and writer. In 1942, Guru Dutt enrolled in Uday Shankar’s dance and choreography School, Almora, but left it in 1944 for personal reasons. Subsequently, he worked as a telephone operator in Kolkata and then started his film career as an assistant director at Prabhat Film Company in Pune. He met actor Dev Anand here. During the shooting of this film, he met singer Geeta Roy, whom he married in 1953. A total of 8 Hindi films were directed by Guru Dutt, including Baji (1951), Jal (1952), Baz (1953), Awar (1954), Mr. and Mrs. ’55 (1955), CID (1956), Pyasa (1957), and paper flowers (1959). His film Pyaasa was included in the list of 100 best films of Time magazine, while ‘Paper Ke Phool’ was India’s first cinemaskop technology. Guru Dutt made many innovations under his direction. He gave a new dimension to close-up shots, which is known as ‘Guru Dutt Shot’. The characters of women were also given special importance in their films, such as Gulabo of ‘Pyaasa’ and the younger daughter -in -law of ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’, which challenged the stereotypes of the society. Guru Dutt’s personal life was complicated like his films. He was married to Geeta Dutt, but his alleged love affair with Waheeda Rehman caused tension in the marital life. Meanwhile, the failure of ‘paper flower’ and the upheaval of personal life pushed them towards alcohol. He died on 10 October 1964 at the age of just 39 years.
