Born on 3 May 1920 in Peshawar, Achala’s life was full of struggles since childhood. When she was just six years old, her father passed away. The mother single -handedly studied and married three daughters. Achla was determined only that she would get married only when she would become financially self -sufficient.

Achla Sachdev started her acting career with All India Radio Lahore, where she participated in radio plays. After partition she came to Delhi and joined All India Radio Delhi. At the age of 20, she got the role of a mother in the first film ‘Fashionable Wife’. Interestingly, playing the role of a mother at such a young age became her debut. The film was a hit, but with a price – she became typical in the characters of ‘Ma’.

Achla continued to work in films along with her radio work.
