Mumbai. Television couple Pooja Banerjee and Kunal Verma are going through heavy financial constraints and legal complications. Couple’s film producer Shyam Sundar Dey is having controversy. Shyam Sundar Dey has accused him of kidnapping, cheating and forcibly recovering money. Recently, the couple dismissed the allegations through a press conference. Pooja accused Shyam Sundar Day of fraud of Rs 1.68 crore on Shyam Sundar Day and said that her mental balance has deteriorated due to this incident.

Pooja claimed, ‘Shyam Sundar Dey was known for the last 3-4 years. He had asked a person to buy rights of 16 films and then sell the rights of these films to a TV channel. The deal was about Rs 2.25 crore and was expected to earn around Rs 3.85 crore. He asked to find investors. It also said that I will give 50 lakh rupees. We did not promise to pay money. Nevertheless, he started putting pressure. I borrowed money from friends and family. My husband Kunal also sought help from his acquaintances. In this way we arranged more than one crore rupees. We had promised to give Rs 1.25 crore but transferred Rs 1.68 crore. When it came to return the money, Shyam started making excuses. Then they stopped picking up our call. Then we came to know through some friends of Kolkata film industry that SEBI’s case is going on him. He has also gone to jail in 2020.

On 23 May 2025, actress Pooja Banerjee lodged a written complaint against Shyam Sundar Day at Bandra Nagar Police Station. Pooja further says, ‘We wanted to resolve the matter among ourselves. On May 31, we reached Goa with Shyam and friend Piyush Kothari was also with us. However, he has nothing to do with this case. Shyam assured to return the money. Even if he returned 10 lakh rupees, he raised hope. He booked a villa and asked us to stay there but had to return to Mumbai for an ad shoot. Kunal also returned. Meanwhile, we came to know that Shyam’s wife has filed an FIR in Kolkata alleging kidnapping and forced recovery. FIR was transferred to Kolkata. I was surprised to hear this.

Pooja told the story ahead crying. He said, ‘I was scared to hear the FIR. I cried on the set itself. Shooting was stopped. When the Goa police questioned Shyam, he could not give any satisfactory answer. We also went to Goa. The police narrated the whole thing. The police understood that we are innocent.

Kunal said, ‘Now I am quarreling with my wife. At night, you do not sleep. I was expelled from a show. The jewelry I had, they are mortgaged in the bank. The second flat also had to be morgged. Some projects have also gone out of Pooja’s hand. I am not even able to look at my child. I have no money left to pay children’s fees.

On 16 July, Pooja lodged an FIR against Shyam Dey in Mumbai. Now there is a loan of 50 lakhs on the couple. He has been fired from many projects. Kunal said, ‘We are financially ruined. They are broken from inside. Still we hope that justice will be received.
