Why Meena Kumari's property in discussion? Now who will be the new owner of the property?

The property of Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi is in controversy these days.

New DelhiMeena Kumari’s name is once again on people’s tongue these days, but this time the actress is not in the discussion due to her films but due to a controversy. In the year 1959, Meena Kumari along with husband and director Kamal Amrohi bought 2.5 acres of land in Pali Hill, Mumbai, which was worth Rs 5 lakh at that time. Meena Kumari’s husband Kamal Amrohi leased this land to a developer who built five buildings named ‘Kozyhum Co-operative Housing Society’ on her. Today this housing society has been engulfed in controversies and 162 families living in it have come to get homeless from their own home.

The dispute started in the 1970s, when Kamal Amrohi alleged that the society did not pay the fixed rent – ₹ 8,835 per month – did not pay. The society’s argument behind not paying the entire fare was that some part of the land was not actually in the name of Kamal Amrohi and hence less rent was paid.

What is the matter?

In 1991, Kamal Amrohi filed a petition against the society on the basis of outstanding fare of ₹ 66,060 and filed a petition to re -transfer the land to his name. After his death in 1993, his son Tajdar Amrohi pushed the case forward. On 23 April 2025, the Small Cause Court of Bandra ruled in favor of Tajdar Amrohi and Arham Land Developers. The court ordered the society to vacate the land within six months.

In view of this order of the court, 162 families living in this society will have to vacate the land. The residents of the Kozihom Society, most of whom are senior citizens, are now preparing to challenge this order in the Bombay High Court. He says that he has also paid interest with all the outstanding fare and the fare is being deposited in an escrow account for the last 20 years.

The court in its judgment cited Section 14 (A) of the lease agreement, which clarify that if the rent amount is challenged or the fare is not paid on time, the owners of the land can cancel the lease and take the land and the building built on it under their ownership. The court also said that the fare was not paid regularly and hence the conditions of the lease have been violated. The Bandra Court also dismissed the Society’s stay petition.
