According to the writer Madhulika Lidle, after college, he came to Bombay and joined the Indian People’s Theater Association (IPTA). At that time, many big actors like Guru Dutt, Balraj Sahni, Sahir Ludhianvi and Salil Chaudhary were also in IPTA. Prem Dhawan learned classical music from Uday Shankar and Ravi Shankar and started writing patriotic songs for IPTA.

Prem Dhawan started his journey in 1946 as a lyricist with the film ‘Dharti Ke Lal’. He then wrote great songs in many films, including ‘Aram’, ‘Tarana’, ‘Akash’, ‘Shola and Shabnam’, ‘Kabuliwala’, ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’ and ‘East and West’. His patriotic songs ‘Ae Watan Ae Watan’ and ‘Mera Rang De Basanti Chola’ became very famous and he brought patriotism and emotions to the hearts of people with his songs and music.

Prem Dhawan performed acting and choreography in his career as well as writing songs and music. He acted in ‘Lajwab’ released in 1950 and ‘Gunj Raifi Shehnai’ released in 1959 and worked as a choreographer in films like ‘Vachna’. Although he did not get much success in choreography, his songs and music gave him a special identity.
